Every student is different.
Some students need to be yelled at; some students need to be gently encouraged.
Some students need to talk to you once a day, others once a month.
The best students need the least time, but make you want to spend the most.
Uniform policies are fine, but a uniform management approach is ineffective.

how do you swing that at a research U? this week on my blog I’ve been talking about teaching at a SLAC and even there I still need blanket policies to keep life sane and manageable (never mind most are dictated from on high and not amendable)

Sorry — I should have specified. I was talking about PhD students in my own research group. For students in courses, it is entirely different — it is very hard to give much at all in the way of individual attention.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
