I have lived in so many places since finishing high school. The friends I make are always moving someplace else– finishing their PhD’s or postdocs, moving on. As one of my friends said, "it seems like as soon as I make a new friend, I have to start searching for their replacement."

This can be such a bummer. It’s one of my least favorite things about working in science.

I like the fact that I’ve made friends in every place I’ve lived throughout my education and academic employment career. When I go to a meeting, I see friends from various stages of my life, and this is extremely fun. Yes, I wish I were still in geographic proximity to some/many, but there are good things about having friends all over the world.

I’m currently mourning my last great friendship from grad school, which seems to have more or less died of late. Very hard to replace. =(

I used to love this, now I think I am growing tired of it…
