From Wikipedia: "An Empire silhouette is created by wearing a high-waisted dress, gathered near or just under the bust with a long, loose skirt, which skims the body. The outline is especially flattering to pear shapes wishing to disguise the stomach area or emphasise the bust. The shape of the dress helps to lengthen the body." This is all well and good, but the styles I am seeing have too many pleats or pleats in the wrong place, leading to the pregnant effect!

ecogeofemme -- I'm not a fan of empire waists on most people. They just work on my body, for some reason. Normally I have the problem of things hanging off the end of my chest and making me look much bigger than I am. :)

The empire waist thing is everywhere and killing me. I'm not pregnant, why do they want me to look that way? (sorry Profgrrrl)

Wishing I had bought more clothes last year during the brief period when they didn't all suck.

Will check out Zappos, thanks for reminding me.

Yay, Facebook. :)

I have not been in a Banana Republic recently, or any other store of that ilk. Fashionable things tend not to fit me. My outfits are typically mid-90s Calvin Klein ensembles. Very uncool. But comfy, baggy, and black!

I have decided that much of this season's fashions are to be ignored (unless in basic grey or black). Better to get new shoes, new accessories, and stick to some classics in the clothing area. This is my way of rationalizing the purchase of new black dresses (mostly empire waist) but little else. I have lots of perfectly good jackets that are far more flattering than what's out there this season. I know Stacy and Clinton would encourage staying with the flattering cut over the currently trendy one, right?
