New year

January 1, 2007

My theme for 2007: embrace uncertainty. The only other option is "be really freaked out by uncertainty," and that doesn’t sound good.

The only certainty is that we all die some day. So uncertainty is life. Right?

Like any truism, whether you find this statement incredibly deep or incredibly trite depends on your state of mind.

The theme for 2006, in case you were curious, was to seek more responsibility and authority. That worked out pretty well, not in any major change in job description but in many small ways.

Happy New Year to all. Thank you for your writing, and your comments. I have enjoyed getting to know you all through your blogs. Your writing has deepened my experience. Best wishes for 2007.

  1. Ah … embracing uncertainty. A good one. Have you read Pema Chodron?

  2. Very wise. I’m hanging on the edge of embracing vs being freaked out by uncertainty myself!

  3. Profgrrrl: no– I will look for her writing. Any particular book?

Note: “the only other option” is of course, a false dichotomy, but I like to exaggerate for effect.

  5. Happy new year! I love your theme—and embracing is always preferable to freaking out, so good choice there. :)

  7. Good luck in embracing change. I tend to submit to it, myself, especially when it involves illness or death of people I love. Nonetheless, we do not really have any choice - change will meet us in any case. And often it is for the better - so happy new year 2007. Good luck.

  9. Pema Chodron (an American Buddhist nun) has a book called: Comfortable With Uncertainty.
That’s a good start. It’s an easy read, and provides some good perspective on life (IMHO).

  10. Just as I was clicking on my bookmark to your blog, I was thinking about a “resolution”. Yours is perfect (especially as we are in similar stages), do you mind if I borrow it?
