I actually care more about my physical location than the name of the discipline. In grad school I did topic X in a building where all the other groups did topic Y and thought X was boring/irrelevant. The posters in the hallway and the seminar announcements were all about Y, as were the cookie-hour conversations. In my postdoc I study the same topic X in a building of people who think X or things loosely related to X are really fascinating-- interestingly, these people come from several different departments/disciplines. So I'm quite comfortable that my area is X, it's just not quite clear what discipline it is in! The last 3 people from my PhD group to get faculty positions went to 3 different types of departments.

I just noticed the same thing as sciencewoman -- and had to resubscribe to get it to work.

Just curious, do you feel comfortable with having 2 areas, as if you fully belong in each?
