"Dr. Shellie’s Subject Area," by Dr. Shellie’s PhD Advisor. Otherwise, "A Wrinkle in Time," by Madeline L’Engle. There was nothing worse than It.

"Flowers for Algernon," which for me just about defines depressing.

The perfect textbook for the first class I teach, including well-selected homework problems.

"Dark Star Safari," by Paul Theroux. I am hoping very much that this guy is wrong about Africa.

"Let Me Tell You Where I’ve Been: New Writing By Women of the Iranian Diaspora."

"Self-Made Man," by Norah Vincent, a woman who pretended to be a man for a while and then had a nervous breakdown. OK, so I oversimplify. Read it yourself.
