  1. One book that changed your life?

"The Gospels Without Myth," which suggested that it was not necessary to believe, strictly speaking, that a small number of loaves and fishes expanded to serve the multitude.

  2. One book you have read more than once?

"Dr. Shellie’s Subject Area," by Dr. Shellie’s PhD Advisor. Otherwise, "A Wrinkle in Time," by Madeline L’Engle. There was nothing worse than It.

  3. One book you would want on a desert island?

"How to Cook Snakes and Dirt With Nothing But Your Makeup Mirror and a Stick"

  4. One book that made you laugh?

"Baghdad Without a Map," by Tony Horwitz, for its description of the Qat-eaters of Yemen.

  5. 5. One book that made you cry?

"Flowers for Algernon," which for me just about defines depressing.

  6. One book you wish had been written?

The perfect textbook for the first class I teach, including well-selected homework problems.

  7. One book you wish had never been written?

"Dark Star Safari," by Paul Theroux. I am hoping very much that this guy is wrong about Africa.

  8. One book you are currently reading?

"Let Me Tell You Where I’ve Been: New Writing By Women of the Iranian Diaspora."

  9. One book you have been meaning to read?

"Self-Made Man," by Norah Vincent, a woman who pretended to be a man for a while and then had a nervous breakdown. OK, so I oversimplify. Read it yourself.

  1. Hey, doc! You’re funny. I like that in a blog. And you’re brainy too. I like that even more.

  2. Ooh! I’ve never been tagged before! Ironic how it happened after I ramped down my frequency of posting, but I’ll get on it this week!

  3. Oh, this looks like an interesting meme — but how hard to narrow it down to one book in each category.

I agree that Flowers for Algernon is a sad book ….

  4. Thanks for playing! I definitely want to check out “Let Me Tell You Where I’ve Been,” and I had forgotten about “Self-Made Man,” which I also meant to read. Thanks!

  5. Thanks for the tag, Dr. Shellie! Just wrote my response but can’t work out the backtrack thingie. I really liked Tony Horwitz too — have you read his other two books, Blue Latitudes, and Confederates in the Attic? I particularly liked the latter, and gave copies to a friend who is Pakistani but now lives in Atlanta, to help her understand the South. ;-)
