Women’s shoes
Why is it so hard to find women’s shoes that stay attached to your feet when you walk, don’t make you tip over and fall when walking on the sidewalk or climbing steps, have a heel more than 3 mm wide but don’t make you look like an aging hippie or earth mother?
Who is it that is buying all the high-heeled gold sandals on sale this season?
Tell me, WHERE DO I BUY professional-looking shoes I can walk in?

I hear you, sister. It’s not easy, but you have to look in the right places. There is no place that works all the time, but the pair of shoes that go with my interview suit are from Aerosoles, purchased in 2004, I believe. Some seasons are better than others as far as wearable shoes go, but give them a look (the casual collection is better).
Garnet Hill (www.garnethill.com) is a bit pricey, but they quite often have fashionable shoes that you can actually wear. I have only bought a pair of sandals on sale there, but they are incredibly comfortable.
I’ve never bought any shoes from Camper–quite pricey!–but many styles look like they would be comfortable.
At the department store, I have had luck with Enzo Angiolini brand in past years. Nine West has cute styles that aren’t ridiculous, but they tend to give me blisters on my Achilles heel, so I don’t buy them any more. But your experience might be different.
Franco Sarto has a couple of more sensible styles mixed in with the heels at Nordstrom .com. I have a pair of Franco Sarto sandals which have never given me a blister, which is practically unheard of. So his shoes might be good, too.
And don’t forget to check out Hush Puppies! I’ve got a cute and comfy pair of their shoes that have never given me a blister either!
And on the sporty side, I have a pair of Tsubo sneakers made of embroidered pink kimono fabric that I adore. But that’s perhaps not quite what you’re looking for.
So go around and Google on the brands above. I think you’ll have a much higher success ratio here, because it sounds like you are looking for the same things I am in a pair of shoes.

Try the products available at www.footpetals.com — they sell an assortment of cushions that you can permanently stick on various parts of your shoes to solve different problems (e.g. blistering, or shoes slipping off the heels of your feet). The cushions can make your shoes surprisingly comfortable. After trying the cushions on some of my shoes, I regretted previously throwing out several pairs of shoes that I had deemed intolerably uncomfortable.
By the way, great blog!

That is a serious question! I prefer to wear tennis shoes to work, and keep a pair of “dressy” ones under my desk (it’s really impossible to walk in them!)
